Breadvan_update_055: bespoke car logo’s jewellery

Bespoke car logo’s jewelry

The Breadvan Hommage will feature our hand-made badges. Coachbuilder Bas van Roomen has made tools to integrate the sharply edged badge into the B-pillar of the Breadvan Hommage. Our design is coachbuilt entirely by hand by Bas. And as he uses the very best materials, as a result, we chose to eliminate plastics to be used for our jewellery. Our badge is handmade in metal. Therefore, it looks and feels better and gives a far superior finish in comparison too. Consequently, the badges feels heavy and the material looks great. Because of the sharp edges we required, stamping our badges was not a possibility. Only a rounded edge can be incorporated through stamping. This is due to the technical restriction of the stamping procedure. Our badge design required a 90 degree top and the 45 degree facetted corner.

Enamel badges

Because of this, the badges is cast in zinc alloy rather than stamped in copper. So, a special tool is made for our badge. It was used to injection mould the badge and create the cut-out look we designed. The aim is to incorporate the sharpness and precision of a handmade car into the look and feel of the badge. We go for a black nickel – or black chrome – plating for the metal base of the badge. To give the right tactile and visual quality the logo is recessed into the metal. This emboss is then filled, by hand, with white enamel. The black chrome showcases the quality of the base metal material beautifully. And, depending on the viewing angle, appears to be either fully black or chromed. The metal colour in the black refers to the quality of the coachbuilding process.

Car emblems

The badge is integrated into the design of the car. Rather than simply stuck on the Breadvan Hommage body. Almost all details in the bodywork are hammered by hand. Bas does this without the use of a hard mould. However, an exception to this is the embossed cut-out for the Niels van Roij Design logos. These are so tight and precise, that making the shape is only possible with a steel mould. These moulds are milled from a solid block of steel. Firstly, the mould is precisely aligned on the inside of the aluminium body panel. This is done by means of a screw in the centre of the mould. Subsequently, the mould is fixed with clamps to the body of the Breadvan Hommage. After this procedure, the recess is hammered into shape. This is done by hand through the use of hammers and spades.
