Every customer essentially becomes a part of the Niels van Roij Design company, taking on the role of project manager for their vehicle. They gain incredible insight into the process, accessing areas of the business normally reserved for our internal experts and engineers. Our customers are truly part of the team throughout.

The Niels van Roij Design customer is involved throughout the entire timeline. There are two main phases: the concept phase, which usually lasts a year for a One-Off, and the realisation phase, where we build the car according to the final agreed concept. The customer is included from the beginning, helping to put the idea together and creating the car from a styling perspective, through technical decisions and specifications, all the way to creative direction. In short, the customer becomes our colleague and project lead.

How is the customer involved in a coachbuilding project?

Every customer has a dedicated point of contact with a Sonderwunsch consultant throughout each step. They also have the opportunity to talk to everyone involved in the project team, including experts from our exclusive and classic departments, as well as the design team. During consultations and progress meetings, everyone involved is there to answer questions, from styling to technical aspects.

Respective experts are brought in as needed. For example, if a customer wants a new roof or headlight system, we’ll bring in engineers to consult. It all depends on what’s necessary – whoever the customer needs to talk to, we make it happen.

What are some challenges that can arise when building a customer’s dream car?

Customers often see the final car in their mind. Challenges can arise when we have to limit certain wishes due to legal or technical constraints. Ensuring a car is road legal requires us to consider safety aspects and technical topics. It’s our job to guide customers, informing them about what can and cannot be done, and explaining why certain compromises may be necessary. Communication is key at every stage.
