ONE-OFF MORGAN

Eccentric Coachbuilding Elegance

Niels van Roij Design’s interpretation of the Morgan DNA through this exercise of 3 unique cars is special. The most striking presence of each and every car is revealed in its side-view, where its unique proportions, new surfacing, and pronounced shoulder line are most evident. The 3 car’s delicate yet exaggerated proportions – Sport, Art Deco and Modern – embody an eccentric elegance reminiscent of Niels van Roij Design’s iconic works, evoking the automotive designs of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The new surfacing, particularly visible on the front and rear wings, offers a subtle preview of Morgan’s evolving design language. The 3 Niels van Roij Design designs also introduce a distinctive shoulder line to the recognizable Morgan profile, made possible by the new surfacing structures.

From the side profile, the classic Morgan wing shape remains apparent, with subtle modifications. Notably, the ‘lift’ in front of both the front and rear wheels and steeper lines help manage airflow and reduce turbulence. This aerodynamic optimization leverages the expertise of Niels van Roij Design. The front wings and nose are unique to each and every one of these 3 cars, with volumes concentric to the wheels’ shape, adhering to a design philosophy of simple primal geometry, distinguishing it from other Morgan models.

Forged wheel design

The 3 very different lightweight forged 19-inch wheel designs, designed exclusively for each of the 3 cars, would weigh around 10 kilograms—a reduction of many kilograms compared to the equivalent 19-inch Plus Six wheel. This weight reduction is achieved through extensive finite element analysis and the decision to forge rather than cast the wheel. Despite its lightness, the wheel designs each exudes a sense of solidity. Hand-formed wings complete the body, providing a sense of volume and an ‘undercut’. Inspired by early Morgan designs.

Bespoke car design

The front of these 3 designs feature new signature headlight units and they flank the horseshoe grille. Each flank is different, some design element direct airflow within the grille aperture. Other has a double side exhaust in the fender. Sport has vertical vents on either side of the bonnet to aid airflow and cooling. The elongated rear tail for the Art Deco accentuates the car’s elegance, reminiscent of iconic designs in the 1930’s and other by Niels van Roij Design. The Art Deco iteration truly evokes forms from the late 1930s and early 1940s. New rear lights are set within half-chamfered light pods, adding to the vehicle’s sophisticated aesthetic.
